The Zanzibar Port Corporation (ZPC) is a public entity, which has full autonomy for operation and development of ports in Zanzibar. It is in charge of five ports in Zanzibar and Pemba Islands.
Malindi port was built in 1925 as a modest lighter port. The wharves of the main seaport were constructed in 1989-1991 with financial assistance from the European Union. The Port handles more than 90 per cent of Zanzibar trade.
It handles between 140,000 and 160,000 tonnes of general cargo per year, including break bulk and about 25,000 tonnes of liquid cargo mainly petroleum products and edible oils.
