Inaugural African Harbour Masters Committee Meeting

The African Harbour Master committee (AHMC), an African chapter of the International Harbour Master Association (IHMA), will be hosting it’s inaugural seminar for African Harbour Masters. The seminar will be held in Tangier, Morocco from 2 – 3 March 2023.
The Theme of the seminar is “The Crucial Role of Human Factors for a Best Future for African Ports.”
The discussions spanning 2 days will focus on technical presentations, panel discussions as well as technical and educational site visits to some of the critical sites in Tangier.
Speaking to the PMAESA Secretariat on the launch, Capt. Mohamed Maghazi, President of the AHMC, said: “The inaugural meeting of African Harbour Masters looks to build the corner-stone for the Harbour Masters in the continent to work together, share ideas and learn from one and another. It presents an opportunity for the ports to develop working relationships as they play a much bigger role in intra-continental trade.”
Capt. Maghazi called on Port Authorities to nominate respective harbour masters to ensure maximum participation in the first edition of the AHMC event.
The seminar will cover key topics such as:
Navigation:
The ever changing world of technology, and climate change, requires maritime organisations of the continent to come up with meaningful solutions and systems that will support the Harbour Masters in the safeguarding of their marine activities and operations.
VTS-PMIS & AtoN:
The discussion and presentations will be regarding the latest aids to navigation equipment and systems including the management of emergencies.
Dangerous Cargo:
Recently around the world there has been incidents associated with dangerous goods. The meeting will also have a training element to empower the Harbour Masters and the Port community on how to handle the dangerous goods safely.
Sustainability and performance:
The majority of the African Ports are busy with the developments. Africa as the rest of the world wants to ensure that all the developments are done in environmental friendly way. Successes across the continent and also in other parts of the world on how can sustainability be good for business will be presented.
Training and skills development:
The seminar will also touch on available training opportunities around the continent this might result in certain MOUs being signed by the different countries to enhance collaboration and sharing of best practise.
