PMAESA Chairman - Mr Richard Vallihu (SOUTH AFRICA)

The PMAESA Board of Directors, during a special Board Meeting held in Mombasa on 11 December 2019 appointed Mr Richard Vallihu Ag. Group Chief Executive of Transnet, (SOUTH AFRICA) as the Chairperson of PMAESA.
The outgoing Chairman Mr Davies Kaluba, Managing Director Mpulungu Harbour Corporation (ZAMBIA) had been holding the seat on an interim basis since following the resignation of Mr Bisey Uirab as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Namibian Ports Authority (NAMIBIA) in March 2019.
Mr Vallihu joined Transnet in 1995, and in 2005 he became the Chief Executive of Transnet Engineering (TE), formerly known as Transnet Rail Engineering. Under his leadership, Transnet Engineering was successfully transformed into a robust engineering and manufacturing enterprise business beyond rail, with customers across the world.
At TE he led a 14 000-strong workforce across six factories and 132 depots in the Republic of South Africa. He also championed the inception of Lean Six Sigma in November 2007, a significant milestone on the TE’s journey. Lean Six Sigma is an initiative to drive TE towards operational excellence to train and develop employees. TE achieved a global first for Lean Six Sigma implementation on SAP.
During his tenure as Chief Executive of Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) from 2015 to 2017, Mr Vallihu oversaw the operation of eight commercial ports with a total staff complement of 4346.
During this time he led the implementation of Operation Phakisa: Oceans Economy initiatives launched by the President of South Africa in 2014. He also spearheaded the successful rollout of TNPA’s Integrated Port Management System (IPMS) which automates marine processes across the country’s commercial ports.
He led the Transnet Security Cluster for effective integration of all Transnet management security systems and to form an integrated Security Forum across all SOE’s and the relevant state agencies, such as SAPS, NIA, etc.
Mr Vallihu has a passion for community engagement programs, especially in the field of education.
He holds a BSc Honors Degree from University of Loughborough in UK and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), Australia. He attained his Advanced Management Program (AMP) from Harvard Business School.
