Workshop Aims at Preventing Maritime Trafficking of Wildlife between Africa and Asia

The Port Management Association of Eastern and southern Africa, represented by Ms. Ruth Muigai, participated in the Regional Trade in Wildlife Information Exchange (TWIX) Workshop in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, heldĀ  26 and 27 October 2022.

The main objective of the workshop was to introduce the TWIX to law enforcement officials from Mombasa, Dar-es-Salaam, Zanzibar seaports and Kampala Dry ports.

The workshop provided the opportunity for the participants to network and learn about the benefits of TWIX, how to use it to support wildlife law enforcement, the best practices from EU-TWIX and AFRICA-TWIX (Also known as Central Africa TWIX)

Trade in Wildlife Information Exchange (TWIX) is an internet tool developed to facilitate information exchange and international co-operation between wildlife law enforcement and management officials. Currently, 4 TWIX Platforms are operational that is, EU-TWIX (2005), Central Africa-TWIX (2016), SADC-TWIX (2019) and Eastern Africa-TWIX (2020).

The workshop therefore, provided insights on the progress update of the TWIX tools and encouraged collaboration in information sharing, with the aim of ‘Reducing Maritime Trafficking of Wildlife between Africa and Asia.’

The participants included representatives from PMAESA, Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forestry Service, Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife-Uganda, Revenue Authority from both Uganda and Tanzania, Tanzania Ports Authority, Zanzibar Ports Corporation, Cameroon TWIX-user and EU-TWIX user.
