PMAESA Signs MoU With North Star Alliance

Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between North Star Aliance (NSA) and PMAESA

Ports and Transport Corridors in the PMAESA region (Eastern, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean Island Countries) serve as a vital arteries for regional trade, mobility and economic development.

However, they are also hot-spots for health risks due to high population mobility, limited access to health services, occupational hazards and poor social conditions. port and transport workers, seafarers and local communities along the ports and corridors face a heightened risks related to communicable diseases e.g. (HIV/AIDS, TB), non- communicable diseases e.g. (hypertension, diabetes), substance abuse, poor nutrition, gender-based violence (GBV), pandemic, epidemic and mental health issues.

From the various national and regional interventions, it is clear that wellness remains an essential component of sustainable and inclusive port development.

It is in this line that the Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA) outlined in its Strategic plan 2024-2028, the “Wellness program in the Ports in the Eastern, Southern Africa and Indian Ocean Island region”, as one of the programs to be implemented from the year 2025.

To back this, PMAESA has today, the 12th June 2025, signed a partnership agreement with the North Star Alliance to re-activate the initiative of developing an integrated wellness program in the Ports across the Eastern and Southern Africa region.

With the support of development and financial partners, this program will seek to create awareness and education on  the critical health and well-being needs of port workers, seafarers and surrounding communities by implementing integrated health services, safety practices and support systems that will in the end, enhance productivity, improve quality of life and contribute to the sustainable development of the maritime and transport sectors in the region.

Present during the signing ceremony was Ms. Eva Mwai, the Director North Star Alliance and Col. Andre Ciseau, the Secretary General of Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA), leading the team from the Secretariat.

PMAESA is encouraged by the steps taken by both organizations to make the signing a success and looks forward to the collaboration with North Star Alliance, as well as other development partners in joining and supporting the initiative.
